How to Diversify Your Dive Gear: The Artistic Flair of Oil-Based Waterproof Pens

Diving is a thrilling adventure that offers excellent opportunities for exploration and self-expression. While dive gear primarily focuses on functionality, who says it can't also showcase your creativity? Enter oil-based waterproof pens—a simple but remarkable addition to your dive arsenal that allows you to bring a personalized touch to your swim fins. In this blog post, we'll dive into the world of artistic expression beneath the waves and explore how to use oil-based waterproof pens for this exciting endeavor.

My first experience using these pens was a bit serendipitous. A friend was embarking on a dive trip and asked if I could design her fins before her departure. After experimenting with several different kinds of markers (some of which had such a strong aroma that I felt a bit light headed after using), I found these were easy to use and had minimal to no aroma.

3. Although the pens do have medium and fine tips, my favorite way to use them is to transfer the paint from the pens onto a paint palette so I can use my paintbrush to apply the paint onto the fins. To do so, I simply press the pen down onto the palette multiple times until the paint begins to overflow out of the pen and pool onto my palette.

4. Make sure that your fins are dry and clean of any ocean debris or dirt/dust that may have accumulated from use. Even when painting on new fins, I like to use alcohol and a clean rag or paper towel to remove any dust or finishing coats that may prevent the paint from adhering properly to the fins.

5. I like to make a quick sketch on the fins using a permanent marker before applying paint so I have a guide to show me the size and scale of the design I want to paint. Don't worry if you make a mistake. It can be easily corrected using rubbing alcohol or acetone. Once you have your design chosen and sketched out you're ready to begin painting! I take extra care around the raised areas of the fins as this is where I'm most likely to make a mistake if I'm not patient.

6. Once you've finished your design, allow the paint to dry completely before taking your next swim.
